Travis Lampe is on to something fantastic! Murphy Art Books is proud to present Travis Lampe’s imaginative story book dreamscapes at Booth No. 4833 during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con July 21-25, 2010.

“Surpriser” (inspired by Raphael‘s St. Michael confounding the Devil)

Travis is a Chicago based artist who will be traveling to San Diego to present a new mini zine, sign, doodle and present his 4 new custom works, as shown here exclusively. Each work has been custom created for Comic-Con and have been painted, acrylic on wood panel with a custom printed silk-screened frame. All pieces are 8" x 8" and deeply inspired, as you will soon see.

“The Flimsy Oath” (inspired by Jaques-Louis David’s The oath of the Horatii)

Jacques-Louis David was commissioned by the Administrator of Royal Residences in 1784 and exhibited at the 1785 Salon under the title "The Oath of the Horatii, between their Father’s Hands. The story was based on Titus-Livy during a period of war between Rome and Alba in 669 B.C. The final painting measures 10' 10" x 13" 11" and is proudly displayed in the Musée du Lourvre, Paris.

“Rat Smooch” (inspired by François Gérard’s Cupid and Psyche)

Francois Gérard’s painting “Cupid and Psyche” (also known as “The Tale of Amour and Psche”) is based on a 2nd century AD novel, “The Golden Ass” by Lucius Apuleius (Latin prose wrter, 125-180).

“Smogram” ( inspired by Jaques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps)

Jaques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps or Napoleon at the Saint-Bernard Pass

David’s “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” is a fitting title for an oil painting that was commissioned by the King of Spain. David worked hard to get it right, between 1801 and 1805 he created five separate versions of the same painting.

One of the oldest urban legends shared in American by comic book collectors is how Mom disposed of your comic book collection by taking it to to the curb. It makes me ponder, “How many super heroes lie dormant in the sea of trash discarded at the city dump?”

Just imagine if Mom never discovered your comic book collection secretly hidden in your bedroom lair. (Not to mention whatever else you were hiding in there). For the lucky ones, according to many experts, if you were able to hold on to your 1938 mint copy of Action Comics No. 1, you and Superman would be high-fiving over your right to claim a $440,000 payday. And if you knew a good superhero when you saw one, your Detective Comics No. 27 introducing Batman in 1939 would be valued at a sweet $375,000. All in all, you would be a millionaire if you were smart enough to hang on to the edgier Human Torch introduced in the first issue of the 1939 Marvel Comics valued at $330,000.

And why am I writing about this adolescent obsession turned mega Hollywood blockbuster phenomena? Glad you asked. “Comic-Con!” Not just any comic convention, it’s San Diego’s original culture-jam that dates back to 1970 featuring 500 comic fans assembled at the U.S. Grant Hotel. (A nostalgic hotel built in 1910, just ask Ray Caesar who resided for one week, he loved it!). Forty years later capacity crowds will gather at the world’s largest costumed celebration complimented with artists, jet-set Hollywood, fanatic collectors and the superhero faithful.

Travis Lampe Interview

Chicago based artist, Travis Lampe, is a gifted storyteller who captures the nightmares inspired by children’s storybooks and bedtime stories. Travis has been featured in exhibitions in Seattle, Chicago, Los Angeles and Art Basel Miami. The following is an interview that introduces you to the imaginative world of Travis Lampe. Enjoy.

mm : Your work captures the nightmares imagined from children’s storybooks : Did you read storybooks as a child? And is there a story or group of books that inspired you to pursue this further in your latest collection of work, “Best Loved Tales of Misery and Woe, Etc.?”

TL : I read a lot as a kid, but this show isn’t inspired by any particular story from the past. It’s about how the malaise of the present can get so intense that it actually ruins previously happy childhood memories. A feeling probably triggered by the current grim atmosphere. Then I take that and try to put a light spin on it .…Exaggerated sadness is funny to me for some reason.

mm : Do you have a favorite piece from this current exhibition or do all of the pieces complete one story being told? Please explain :

TL : I most enjoyed making the sculptural pieces like “1:6 Scale Magnus,” “Anders” (the rat head) and “Prize.” Because I’m crafty. I also really enjoyed painting “Rat Herder,” “Rainbow Drooper” and “Love Proof.”

The paintings in the show are but snippets of parts of a collection of ne’er-been-told tales. So if you pieced them together you still wouldn’t have the whole story. What links the snippets is that they’ve all been spoilt by the backwards creeping stain of woe…

mm : With Comic-Con just around the corner, are you planning on any special toy releases or signings?

TL : Unfortunately I won’t make it to Comicon this year. But if things work out I will have a prototype design of a sweet new platform toy on display. And yes it’s sad.

I’ve got plenty of other projects in the works, too, but due to delays as a result of the economy, I’m not sure that several of them will be done in time. Bleh.

mm : What is next for Travis Lampe and what subject matter would you like to feature in your works over the next few months?

TL : Next I’m taking a small break and travelling to Italy and Slovenia, both of which I highly recommend.

Soon after I get back I’ll be taking part in a group show at Merry Karnowsky Berlin, which I’m excited about.

As far as subject matter for upcoming stuff, it’s hard to say. I often start out with a plan and end up veering off in an entirely different direction. Right now the images in my head are of half buried creatures with lots of arms and legs, but I’m not sure where that will take me…I’ve been reading a lot of Lovecraft lately, so maybe that’s where the images are coming from.

mm : Where can people learn more about the imaginative world of Travis Lampe and do you have any other exhibitions or projects that you are working on?

TL : I have an interview in the next issue of Hi Fructose Magazine (vol 12) due out in July! In it, I reveal all. Questions such as "why all the sad stuff?" are answered in detail.
