Plugging it some more

“Plug Me,” a new collection of hand-made prints, paintings and mini zines is in full effect. Last night through the morning I worked on a multiple impression lino block print made up of 6-8 total images. Six total prints were completed with 16 hand-printed impressions equalling 96 printing impressions.

Step one—print all of the background colors. Step two—print one 3" x 3" block image over the top of the backgrounds. The result, a unique grid of images that took no less than 16 custom color mixes, printing impressions and featured 8 unique, carved out images. Save the date for the April 15 premier of “Plug Me” happening at Subtext gallery in San Diego.

Lino Cuts Prep

Over the next few days I am going to be working on relief prints, pressure prints and monoprints with my good pal Cathie Bleck. Last night, I decided to carve my heart out and complete ten 3" x 3" block prints using the Staedtler Master Carve Blocks. This past weekend I shared lino block printing with a few hundred kids during Black Book Sessions and was surprised at how many had experienced this art form in class. PS, if you are going to get into printing, the other Speedball brand of Speedy Cut, ummm not so good, but their inks are rocking.

Plug Me some more

Last night, I took the opportunity to organize all of the linoleum block prints completed over the past 9 weeks. As of now, there are 20 different editions, one offs and mixed media assemblages. (Please check out earlier posts—one, two, three).

All of this output will be individually packaged and available at the end of next week. These experiences—printing, drawing and painting has been uplifting. Especially now, after considering what a privilege it is to create when there are so many tragic events taking place all around the world.

Thanks for taking a quick look. More soon and save the date for my first solo show “Plug Me,” featuring linoleum block prints, paintings, jewelry and sculpture at Subtext, April 15, 2011. Looking forward.

Plug ME Exhibit 4_15_11

Meteors Side by Side : Lino Block Print : Color One
Over the past three months I have been preparing for my first solo show, “Plug Me,” taking place April 15 at Subtext in San Diego. The process has been fun—a get back to school mentality—learning more about linoleum, wood block and etching print techniques and putting emphasis on a cohesive body of work.

“Plug Me” is a look at the spewing of the mouth so to speak. To me, “It’s all about saying too much, not listening closely enough, neglecting to follow up the words with action.” Now apply that to leadership political and religious views, miss guided information or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

The direction is focussed, the process organic and for now progress is all in various stages. My hope is to create a big enough pile of work that can be sifted through, looking for the best bits and offer a inspired show.

“The work often reflects a delicate balance for mutual survival and at times man’s invention inhibits nature’s call for coexistence.”

“Plug Me” will feature a collection of sculpture, painting, printing, design, words and images that invite the viewer to recognize that all living things have eyes to see and are requesting an increase in positive human interaction. Save the date—April 15, 2011—Subtext, San Diego.

Linoleum Block Holiday

“Friends” Carving II

Friends. The key to enjoying the holidays. And with this theme, a second and third carving on the linoleum block shared on 12_14_10. These are steps towards preparing for my first solo show at Subtext in San Diego entitled “Plug Me.”

Friends” Carving III

“Plug Me” takes an imaginative look at how political and corporate leaders continually spew at the mouth. The other worldly characters hope to minimize the damage, looking for answers and searching out micro resolutions that might bung up the flow. Or, maybe this is a polite call to action for those who spew at the mouth too often. “Plug Me” takes place April 15, 2011 and will feature: drawings, watercolors, sculptures, linoleum block prints, zines and paintings.

“Friends” Carving I

The linoleum block print experiment continues. Speedball is adequate, but this kid is looking for higher quality, so the hunt is on. Feel free to let me know what online supplier or supplies you love to use. I feel like it is back to school and learning more and more. Thank you, happy holidays and more soon. Enjoy.

12_14 AM Linoleum Block Print

Often times when I fly, I try to write and draw and most times randomness fills white pages. As I learn how to carve different surfaces, I try to keep these moments random, wondering what will appear.

Last night, as work was just about caught up, I thought to carve away and see what might happen. The following is the first base color of a multi-colored block print loosely based on a drawing created on a plane back to winter land Ohio during Christmas.

Happy holidays and remember the Murphy Design Winter Wonderland book sale is still cranking. Thanks to all who have ordered. Enjoy the linoleum block prints and more soon.
